Hardship Funds

The University administers a number of Hardship Funds which are provided by the Government and the University to help students who are experiencing particular financial difficulty. The Registry works closely with the Edinburgh University Students’ Association (EUSA) Advice Place in the administration of these funds and any student experiencing financial difficulty should go to one of the Advice Place offices for advice and an application form in the first instance.

Student loans are an integral part of the system of student support and in order to be eligible for any Hardship Funds, students must have applied for their full student loan entitlement and received their first instalment.

Hardship Funds (available to UK students – undergraduate and postgraduate)

The Hardship Funds are an additional source of financial support provided by the Government to help meet the living costs of students who are experiencing financial hardship. The available funds are limited and are designed to provide supplementary support to students in financial difficulties. They are not sufficient nor intended to be a student’s primary source of income.

These funds are for students who are in financial difficulties which could not have been foreseen at the commencement of their University course and who cannot fund themselves from any other source. As a result, it is expected that students who apply to the Hardship Funds will have already exhausted all other possible sources, such as the Student Loans Company, bank overdraft and Career Development Loans, if available to them.

Students may apply to the Hardship Funds at any point during the academic year and must demonstrate that their financial circumstances have materially worsened if applying again within the same academic session. In general, maintenance is assessed over the academic year appropriate to a student’s programme of study and awards will not normally be made retrospectively i.e. any maintenance award made will only be calculated for the remainder of the academic year from receipt of application and appropriate documentation.

Childcare Fund

The new Childcare Fund will replace the Mature Students Bursary Fund and will take effect from the 2005/06 academic year. This new Fund will provide assistance with the cost of formal registered childcare expenses for dependant children only. Formal childcare includes childminders, after school clubs, day care, sitter services and providers of pre-school education.

The Childcare Fund will be available to all eligible full-time undergraduate students (or those in receipt of the undergraduate package of support (i.e PGDE or PGDipCe).

There is no specific childcare fund for postgraduates.

Not all eligible students will receive help, as the fund is limited.
Common Bursaries Fund (available to EU, Overseas and Self-funding students)

These funds are provided by the University to help students who are experiencing particular financial difficulty but who are ineligible to receive an award from Government Funds. These funds are very limited and as a result the maximum award which can be made is capped at £600.

All applications to Hardship Funds will normally be assessed within 15 working days following receipt of the form and appropriate documentation in Registry. If successful, it can take up to a further 10 days for a cheque to be processed and received.
