Career Development Loans

A Career Development Loan (CDL) is a deferred repayment bank loan which students can use to help pay for vocational education or training. The Department for Education and Skills pays the interest on the CDL whilst the student is in education and up to one month afterwards. Students then repay the loan to the bank over an agreed period at a fixed rate of interest.

CDLs are available through three high street banks – Barclays, The Co-Operative and The Royal Bank of Scotland. Students do not have to be an existing account holder but the bank may require them to open an account with them. Students can borrow anything between £300 and £8,000 to help them fund two years of learning plus (if relevant) up to one year’s practical work experience where it forms part of the course.

You will find further information on the DfES website:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/cdl

or by calling the enquiry line for potential CDL applicants - 0800 585 505 (freephone)

Once you have received an application form from your chosen bank, you are responsible for ensuring that the information you give on the form is correct. For a Co-operative Bank application you will be required to come in to Registry or send your form to Registry (with a stamped and self addressed envelope) in order that it can be officially stamped. Application forms for Barclays and The Royal Bank of Scotland do not require an official stamp, but you will have to contact the Scholarships and Financial Support Team in Registry for information in order to complete the Learner Provider section of the form. The telephone number to ring is 0131 651 4070 or you can request the information by email to financial.aid@ed.ac.uk - giving your matriculation number, name, address and details of the bank to which you are applying.
