The MBML Training Program is a three year PhD program within the
University of Giessen Lung Center based at the Justus-Liebig-
University School of Medicine in Giessen, Germany. It offers

physiology, in close cooperation with Columbia University College of
Physicians and Surgeons and the Albert-Einstein-College of Medicine,
New York, USA. The collaborating centers are leading research
facilities for paediatric and adult pulmonary medicine. Eligible
applicants will be jointly supervised on research topics in vascular
and pulmonary research in one of the following groups:
Oliver Eickelberg, MD: Targeting the TGF-beta Pathway in Pulmonary
Fibrosis
Ardeshir Ghofrani, MD: The Nitric Oxide Synthase System in
Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury
Friedrich Grimminger, MD, PhD: Tyrosine Kinase Profiling in Lung
Cancer
Andreas Günther, MD: Dysregulation of the Host Defense in Pulmonary
Fibrosis
Jörg Hänze, PhD: Cellular Signalling and Gene Regulation in Hypoxia
Wolfgang Kummer, MD: Role of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors on
Alveolar Macrophages in a Pulmonary Anti-Inflammatory Cholinergic
Pathway
Jürgen Lohmeyer, MD: Molecular Pathways of Bacterial Injury to
Respiratory Epithelial Cells
Konstantin Mayer, MD: Acute Lung Injury - Connecting Lipid Signaling
and Emulsions with Leukocytes
Rory Morty, PhD: Molecular Mechanisms of Acute Lung Injury
Daniel Sedding, MD: Smooth Muscle Phenotypic Switching in

Vascular Remodelling
Norbert Weissmann, PhD: Reactive Oxygen Species, Nitric Oxide and
Hypoxia
The program is intended for selected applicants with a Masters degree
or equivalent in biochemistry, biology, veterinary or human medicine,
or molecular biology. Selected PhD students will be supported by full
time-stipends for three years. Applications should include a full
CV, a statement of research interests, and the names and addresses
