Postgraduate research studentships in law at LSE

London School of Economics Department of Law Postgraduate Research Studentships in Law For the academic year 2006/2007, the Department of Law at The London School of Economics will offer up to four postgraduate research studentships/scholarships.
These awards will be available to all applicants wishing to pursue study leading to the degree of MPhil/PhD. The studentships/scholarships will be awarded on the basis of merit and outstanding academic achievement.
The studentships/scholarships are open to all applicants who meet the entry requirements as specified in the School prospectus, although one Law Department Studentship may be reserved for Home/EU applicants. The Department is one of only eight UK law departments to hold the highest rating for outstanding international excellence in legal research (RAE 5*) and currently has some 97 students in candidature for the MPhil/PhD degrees.
All studentships/scholarships are for a fixed term of two years. This is subject to satisfactory completion of the first year, after which the award will be renewed for a second year, subject to further satisfactory progress. Before applying to any of the studentships you must have either applied to, or have been accepted on the Law Department’s postgraduate research programme.
Applicants should pay particular attention to the areas of research interest specified by each studentship/scholarship. These are outlined below:
Studentships and Scholarships available:
· Up to two Law Department Research Studentships. These are open to any applicant and consist of payment of full fees and a contribution of up to £5,000 per annum towards maintenance.
· The Wedderburn Scholarship.* This is available to applicants researching in the fields of Commercial Law, Company Law or Labour Law. This award consists of consist of payment of full fees and a contribution of up to £5,000 per annum towards maintenance.

The Judge Rosalyn Higgins Scholarship.** This is available to applicants researching in the field of Public International Law. This award consists of consist of payment of full fees and a contribution of up to £5,000 per annum towards maintenance.
Application Process:
The closing date for all applications is Wednesday 14th June 2006. Applicants should indicate clearly on their application form which Scholarship/Studentship they wish to apply to.

Applicant must provide:
· A completed Postgraduate Research Application Form
·
· A brief statement of the proposed or current research either on the application form or attached to it.
Applicants who are currently registered as doctoral students must also provide the following:
· Two references, one of which must be supplied by their supervisor.
Please ensure you enclose a completed checklist.
Any late or incomplete applications will not be considered under any circumstances. Please ensure you submit your application in hard copy, email applications will not be accepted.

*The Wedderburn Scholarship is funded through the generosity of donors to the Wedderburn Trust Fund, established in the name of Professor Lord Wedderburn of Charlton, QC, FBA, Cassel Professor of Commercial Law at the LSE from 1964-92.
**The Judge Rosalyn Higgins Scholarship is funded through the generosity of donors to the Higgins Trust Fund, established in the name of Professor Rosalyn Higgins, QC, DBE, Professor of International Law at the LSE from 1981-1995.
