Project Title: Molecular characterisation of familial colorectal
cancers.
Project Description: Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of
cancer related death in Ireland. This project will focus on the
identification of molecular features that further discriminate between
sporadic and familial subsets of colorectal cancer. This should lead
to improved diagnosis and prognosis and also provide a basis for
future molecular target-based intervention studies.
This Health Research Board of Ireland funded PhD project will be based
in the Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research at
University College Dublin. The study is part of an ongoing
collaboration with the Centre for Colorectal Disease in St. Vincent's
University Hospital Dublin and will provide opportunities for
interaction with the clinical research environment within that
hospital.
Techniques will include array comparative genomic hybridisation
(aCGH), mutation detection and methylation analysis. High throughput
immunohistochemical analysis will be carried out using tissue
microarray methodology using an automated microscopy imaging system
with advanced image analysis software. This project has the potential
to translate advances in molecular genetics into improved patient care.
Qualifications: Good honours degree or an MSc, in a biological science
or related subject. Familiarity with basic techniques in molecular
biology would be an advantage.
