The studentships fall into three main areas:

dysfunctionality in financial markets. Among the issues studied will be
principal-agent problems in delegating asset management, implications of
herding and psychological bias, asset market volatility, and possible policy
responses.

performance, predictability in financial asset returns, asset allocation and
risk management for hedge funds.
- within the Banking Centre, which will look at various issues related
to banking risk management, such as economic and regulatory capital,
modelling portfolio credit risk, stress testing techniques, operational risk
modelling and the pricing and risk analysis of structured products.

The studentships will pay a bursary of £12-15k plus EU fees and will run
for a period of up to three years.

Applicants should hold a good MSc in a relevant discipline such as finance,
mathematical finance or economics.

Since 2003, the Business School has grown substantially, following a major
investment by Imperial College. Reflecting Imperial strengths in maths,
technology, and medicine, the Business School is organised into three
groups: Finance & Accounting; Innovation & Entrepreneurship; and
Organisation & Management. The Finance & Accounting group has recently
hired nine outstanding new faculty, including four Professors and four
Associate Professors.

The purpose of Tanaka Business School's doctoral degree is to enable
outstanding scholars to conduct original research with major impact on
academia and management practice. Exceptional faculty connections to both
of these and our diverse student body create unique opportunities to
undertake research at the frontiers of one's field. Proximity to Imperial's
science departments together with our faculty's wide-reaching interests
create an energized and continuously evolving intellectual environment at
the cutting edge of innovation in business and policy. It is also one that
encourages the pursuit of multidisciplinary study, collaboration and access.

There are around 35 research active supervisors involved in the Doctoral
programme and up to 80 students, making it one of the largest in the UK.
Close mentoring and contact with faculty help map a challenging blueprint
tailored to one's own interests whilst also offering a rich exposure to
others' ideas. A significant number of our doctoral students join from
abroad, one third coming from outside the European Union, combining a
variety of cultural, intellectual and educational perspectives.

There is no closing date for applications for the Studentships. However,
you are advised to apply as early as possible since we anticipate a high
level of interest.
