PhD Studentship in Computer Science - The Universiteit van Amsterdam

PhD position in Computer Science The Universiteit van Amsterdam
Amsterdam, (The Netherlands), 38 hours per week

Job description
------------------------------
The Intelligent Systems Laboratory Amsterdam (ISLA) of the Informatics
Institute has an open PhD position in the PERCEPT project, which is a
European collaboration situated at the edge of computer science and
human
cognition. The aim of PERCEPT is to 'measure the impossible' by
pioneering
an approach for explicating a person's subjective interpretation of
images.
Within PERCEPT, we target the mechanisms that influence our decisions
regarding where we look and what we find visually attractive.

Tasks

For this project, we are looking for a bright MSc who has the
motivation to
take on such challenges from a computer vision perspective. Deciding
where
to look requires a fast selection process, based on a moment-to-moment
representation of potentially 'important' regions in the scene. Our
hypothesis is that the visual system does so by determining areas that
deviate in a statistical sense from the rest of the scene. This
information
constitutes a salience map that determines to which parts of the image
we
pay attention. Algorithms will be illustrated by applying them to
masterpieces of European art. Results will be directly related to
eye-tracking and fMRI studies of the same masterpieces, in close
cooperation
with the University Medical Centre Groningen.
