PhD Student Functional-structural modelling of roses

Job description

Functional-Structural Plant Models, FSPM, describe both functions and
the
three-dimensional structure of plants. It is the objective of the
project to
develop an FSPM of glasshouse roses that explains the relation between
canopy architecture and flower production and serves as a tool for
decision
support for rose growers. A postdoc, a PhD and an assistant are
expected to
work in close cooperation. The main tasks of the PhD include (i) to
contribute to the conceptual framework of an FSPM, (ii) conduct
experimental
research on rose morphology and 'bud break', (iii) contribute to model
validation, (iv) to contribute to model validation and to conduct
scenario
studies showing flower production in relation to various factors and
(vi) to
write a PhD thesis, based on publications in high-ranking international
scientific journals.
Requirements

Required education/skills:University Graduate
We are looking for:
• a team player
•Graduation from a university with relevant subjects (e.g. elements
from
theoretical biology, computer science, plant sciences, mathematics)
•The CV clearly reflects an interest in quantitative approaches in
plant
biology.
•Proficiency in and affinity with working with computers and research
instruments
•Good communication skills, needed to act as a member of the project
team
and to inspire personnel involved in the project

involved
include a postdoc (3 years), a PhD (4 years) and a research assistant
(3
years).
Conditions of employment

Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2000 - 2500
Salary: scale 07.
Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2472
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: For a period of one year with a possible
extension
of three years.
Maximum hours per week: 38
Additional conditions of employment:
Start: preferably December 2006 – February 2007
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 1933 in the first year rising
to €
2472 in the fourth year.
Duration of the contract: for a period of one year with a possible
extension
